Utah Lake Family Fishing Guide
Utah Lake is a great place to take the family fishing. Easy-access piers, willing bluegill, and full facilities make it ideal for kids and beginners.
Family Fishing at Utah Lake
Utah Lake is one of the best family fishing destinations in Utah Valley. With easy-access piers, panfish that bite readily, and multiple developed facilities, it's an ideal place to introduce kids to fishing or enjoy a family outing on the water.
Best Family Fishing Spots
Utah Lake State Park Pier
The number one recommendation for families. The ADA-accessible fishing pier offers comfortable, safe fishing with nearby restrooms, picnic areas, and a playground. Bluegill bite consistently from the pier on simple setups — perfect for young anglers experiencing their first catches. Channel catfish provide excitement for older kids and parents.
American Fork Harbor
The harbor walls provide easy fishing access with parking, restrooms, and picnic areas nearby. Catfish and bluegill are the primary catches. The sheltered water is calmer than the open lake, making it more comfortable for families.
Provo Boat Harbor
The harbor area offers pier fishing in a sheltered setting. Good facilities and easy access make it another solid family option.
What Kids Can Catch
- Bluegill — The best beginner fish. They bite readily on small pieces of worm under a bobber. Kids love seeing the bobber go under!
- Channel Catfish — Bigger fish that provide more of a fight. Nightcrawlers on a bottom rig from the pier work well.
- Carp — Willing biters on corn. While not traditional targets, kids get excited by their size (5-15+ pounds).
Family Fishing Tips
- Keep it simple. A bobber, hook, and worm is all you need to catch bluegill. Don't overthink it.
- Keep sessions short. For young kids, 1-2 hours is plenty. Leave while they're still having fun.
- Bring snacks and drinks. Hungry, thirsty kids lose interest quickly.
- Use barbless hooks. Easier to remove from fish and safer if a kid gets hooked accidentally.
- Let kids reel in the fish. That's the exciting part! Help them cast but let them do the reeling.
- Check algae advisories before visits during summer — see our algae safety guide.
- Bring sunscreen and hats. There's limited shade at most fishing spots.
Licensing for Kids
Children under 12 can fish without a license when accompanied by a licensed adult. Youth ages 12-13 need a reduced-price fishing license. Check our regulations page for details.
