Utah Lake Summer Fishing Guide

Peak season for catfish and bass at Utah Lake. Warm water drives maximum fish activity, with dawn, dusk, and night being the most productive times.

Summer Fishing at Utah Lake

Summer (June through August) is peak fishing season at Utah Lake. Warm water temperatures in the 65-78°F range drive maximum fish activity for catfish, bass, and most warm-water species. The long daylight hours and warm evenings make it ideal for after-work and weekend trips.

What to Target in Summer

Channel Catfish — Peak Season

Summer is prime time for catfish at Utah Lake. Fish are feeding aggressively and can be caught from shore, pier, and boat using stink bait, chicken liver, nightcrawlers, and cut shad. Night fishing is particularly productive when daytime temperatures are high. The state park pier, harbors, and Lincoln Beach all produce well.

Largemouth Bass

Bass fishing in Provo Bay hits its stride in summer. Early morning topwater action with frogs and buzzbaits is outstanding, followed by spinnerbaits and soft plastics through the day. Evening and night fishing with dark lures extends the productive hours.

White Bass

After the spring spawning run, white bass school in open water chasing shad. Locate schools with electronics and cast small jigs, spoons, and crankbaits for fast action.

Summer Challenges

Algae Advisories

Harmful algal blooms are most common during the hot summer months. Always check HABs.utah.gov before heading out, especially during calm, hot periods. See our algae guide for safety information.

Heat Management

Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and shade. Fish early morning (5-9 AM) and evening (6-10 PM) when temperatures are more comfortable and fish are most active. Night fishing is an excellent option for both comfort and productivity.

Summer Tips

  • Fish early or late — dawn and dusk are the most productive and comfortable times.
  • Night fishing for catfish is outstanding and beats the heat.
  • Always check algae advisories before contact with the water.
  • Bring sun protection — there's little shade on the open lake.
  • Arrive early at boat ramps on weekends — they fill up fast.
